It’s possible to play Black Metal without repeating the same formula over and over, and there’s much to explore. I know it is a bit different from what I have done before, especially the last album Crimes Against Humanity, but I think it’s necessary. – Greetings! Yes, I agree with everything you said, since the first steps in the making of it that I idealized a more solitary and introspective approach both musically and lyrically. How do you yourself view Lurking In The Depths in relation to your previous works? The album seems to take from many of your past releases, but has also pushed forward into new ground – while still seething with rage and hatred the overall sound of the album almost seems more solitary and even introspective than I’ve heard from Irae in a while, and it is markedly different from your superb previous 7″ The Old Ways.

Greetings Vulturius! It’s an honour to be speaking with you today regarding the recent release of the fifth Irae full-length, Lurking In The Depths. So listen, read and walk the path and submit thyself completely to the malefic power of the hidden diabolic that ever remains, Lurking In The Depths. Luckily for you I don’t have to, because not only is the album already streaming in its entirety but we have the great honour of speaking to Vulturius himself to discuss this bewitching record that contains some of his finest work to date. The lethal swagger and venom of Ratazanas, the cold majesty and spiritual summonings of A Blaze In The Mist… I could go on. The magickal Black Metal Violador, swinging betwixt a type of languid, unfurling sardonic menace and melancholy synth transcendence akin to the power of the night seething and simmering within before bursting out in frenzied, impassioned abandon as it surges through your blood. Then the classic Scandinavian riffs of Nightshade as it begins the hermitic journey, imbued with a bleak malevolence as Vulturius does what he does best with riffs winding around an insistent percussive storm, rising and falling in tumult (his vocals are in top form, too – volatile and vicious, giving voice to the forces swirling just out of sight and once more becoming their emissary). There’s the eerie ambience that opens the gate drawing you inwards to a twilight realm where you can almost feel the pure manifestation of evil emanating from the very earth below, lurking in the depths. It’s diverse collection of songs, each of which possess their own stunning moments and elements. Partially written in isolation (he even penned a sizable portion of the lyrics whilst stranded in an airport due to COVID-19), this saturnine beast takes the devilishly recognizable Irae cacophony to all new and yet still familiar places… even the synths have returned. Forging a different path through the darkness than previous releases, Lurking In The Depths sees Vulturius‘ diabolical compositions as inflamed as ever yet taking a more reclusive, distant and even more misanthropic sound than say, Crimes Against Humanity. Well, it was released a couple of weeks ago now via Signal Rex – but that’s splitting hairs and if you somehow haven’t heard it yet, you need to listen.

Countless demos, splits and four full-lengths have cemented Irae as a pillar of the Portuguese scene… and now the time has come for one more display of hatred as Vulturius unleashes his fifth album-length slab of wrath, entitled Lurking In The Depths. For almost two decades, darkness has reigned in the Portuguese sky – for that is how long IRAE, the solo outlet of the inimitable Vulturius and founding act of the Portuguese black circle, has existed like a poisoned dagger in the side of all that is holy.
